Artificial Insemination Course

LogosA&P International hosted an A.I. course over the 25th, 26th and 27th of June 2014. We were lucky to have a fantastic venue and facilities to use, at the Zambeef Kalundu Dairy in Chisamba. We hope that this will become a regular event, to offer after – sales support to our SEMEX customers.  Ten participants, some who travelled across Zambia, to Chisamba attended the course.

In accordance with the high professional standards of A&P International those on the course received excellent tuition. Although A.I. is not a veterinary procedure, the course was facilitated by consultant veterinarian Dr. Douglas Bruce, who regularly teaches A.I. Dr. Bruce was assisted by Dr. Danstan Mwinga of Zambeef, and their Herd Manager Mr. Raphael Phiri, an accomplished A.I. technician, who has performed a mere eleven thousand inseminations throughout his career. A special thanks to Mr. Steven Hapelt, for assistance with catering and organization of cull cows on the farm, and to all of the staff at Kalundu Dairy for welcoming the group.

Students during the anatomy practical on female reproductive tracts.

A number of topics were covered in the classroom. Firstly an anatomy lesson was conducted, which included dissection of female reproductive tracts. This provided necessary insight to the shape and function of female reproductive organs and their association with A.I. procedures. Each student was also able to practice inseminations on the reproductive tracts.

After sufficient practice and handling of the reproductive tracts, the students were able to partake in ‘rectal tourism’ as Dr. Bruce calls it. A group of cull cows was used for practice, so that each student could become familiar with the anatomy of a live cow. Students were encouraged to swop animals and become habituated to the variation between different cows, which they are likely to encounter in their future as an inseminator.

Bruce also gave an introduction to physiology and hormones. Moreover nutrition with respect to reproduction, and milk yield was also covered. The advantages and disadvantages of using A.I. were discussed, as well as lessons on correct use and storage and handling of semen, nitrogen flasks and other A.I. equipment. Detecting heat is integral to correct timing of insemination, and hence conception, therefore this was covered in depth in the classroom, and some time was spent watching cow groups for signs of heat.

Tour of the Kalundu Dairy farm

Tour of the Kalundu Dairy farm.

A tour of the Kalundu farm was conducted one evening, which allowed participants to learn and ask questions about all aspects of cattle and dairy farming. Dr. Bruce touched briefly on calf rearing and feeding, silage preparation, and feeding of the pre- and post –partum cows and heifers. This was also an opportunity to show-case the new cow housing on the farm.  A short presentation on the upcoming prospects in animal biotechnology was given, including sections on in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer.  The participants were also educated on the oestrus cycle and oestrus synchronization. The cull cows which were used in the second practical sessions had been synchronized so that most of them were on heat during the practice sessions. This meant that the students were taught and could practice the A.I. procedure in a realistic setting.

A couple of the students who attended already perform A.I., but attended the course in order to refine their technique and were grateful for the opportunity to question Dr. Bruce and Dr. Mwinga about any difficulties they experience. These experienced participants were of great assistance to the beginners.

On the last day, a short test was written, and thankfully passed, by all participants. Following the theory test, a practical test was held. The students approached one by one, where they were presented with a table laid out with all the necessary equipment. Each student had to remove a semen straw from the nitrogen flask, correctly thaw it, load their pistolette, select a cow and perform the insemination. This was monitored by Dr. Bruce, Dr. Mwinga and

Mr. Raphael Phiri, to ensure that each student’s insemination technique was appropriate and accurate. We urge each of the successful participants to continue to practice regularly, and for the amateurs, who are qualified but not experienced, to find a mentor and gain experience.

Mr. Dale Cantlay, the Managing director of A&P International, Lusaka joined the group on Friday to present certificates to the participants. On the whole the A.I. course was enjoyed by all involved and the participants have left with a valuable life-skill.

Southern Province Field Days

LogosOn the 17th and 18th of June 2014 three small-scale farmers’ meetings were held in the Southern Province of Zambia. These were principally hosted by Parmalat, but included presentations by members of the various industries providing support for the dairy sector. The group included Mr. Clever Chisuwo of Parmalat, Mr. Johan Wolhuter; animal nutritionist of Novatek Feeds, Mr. Pierre Marx; sub-Saharan Africa support for the Canadian bovine genetics company – Semex Alliance and Ms. Lara Nicholson of A&P International – distributors of Deluxe hygiene chemicals and Semex genetics in Zambia. An Australian volunteer (experienced dairy manager) Mr. John Wilson also attended. The idea behind these gatherings was to help empower the farmers in this area, who often feel disconnected from the commercial and city centers.

A group of nearly 100 farmers, including members from three milk collection centres, attended the field day in Niko. The majority of farmers in this area farm with traditional breeds of cattle, and have not yet begun to manage their herd for milk production. However, they are enthusiastic and wish to take on more sophisticated farming practices so as to increase their milk yields, whilst still keeping cattle for cultural purposes.  During this meeting the farmers were given a presentation on the necessary practices to ensure high milk quality and hygiene. Southern Province Dairy Field DaysAttendants were given samples of AKTISUDS hypochlorite- based powder detergent disinfectant which is appropriate for washing milk cans and buckets. In addition herd health, cow comfort and some veterinary aspects were covered. This resulted in a productive discussion around important topics such as vaccination, udder care and calf rearing. Johan went on to discuss the importance of nutrition and correct feeding for production and reproduction. There was a strong emphasis on Novatek’s new Nova-milk-35 product, and those who attended were given a pamphlet explaining the correct use and benefits of this product. Unfortunately none of the farmers who were present are making use of artificial insemination (A.I.) at this stage although they were aware of it. Mr Marx helped them to understand the idea behind using AI and the benefits of using proven genetics to improve their herds.

The next farmers’ meeting was in Choma, hosted at the milk collection centre. This assembly was smaller, although the participants were more advanced and a number of emerging farmers were present in the group. These farmers already had a full understanding of the necessary hygiene protocols, and no doubt they will have made good use of the AKTISUDS sachets they were given. The Novatek presentation on nutrition was received well – as they understood the principles behind feeding each cow as an individual, according to her lactation stage and body condition. Southern Province Dairy Field DaysAgain, Johan expertly guided them through the importance of monitoring and manipulating feeding regimes to enhance fertility and optimize production. The Semex presentation was similarly well received. The farmers themselves were able to recount the advantages of using A.I. over a bull and enjoyed Mr. Marx’s explanation of the principles of genetics. There were two A.I. technicians present, who were knowledgeable about the necessity of using high quality genetics to improve the national herd.  Furthermore, this proactive group is already holding regular discussion groups to share knowledge about the problems they encounter. In this area recurring mastitis was troubling a number of farmers and a worthy discussion was held on the topic, following the short health, cow comfort and veterinary presentation.

On Tuesday 18th, the third field day was held in Monze, at the GART Dairy Cooperative. This comprised a fairly progressive group of approximately eighty farmers. With regard to dairy hygiene, many of those who attended were aware of the products needed, and the costs and benefits associated with increasing their level of hygiene. However, true to the ‘tragedy of the commons theory’ most were reluctant to invest in better chemicals and a more stringent protocol. They are acutely aware that the milk price is determined by the quality of the milk in the bulk vat at the collection centre, meaning that unless all farmers made the same improvements the few who did progress would not see a financial advantage. Southern Province Dairy Field DaysTo solve this problem, they noted that some system of hygiene chemical rationing would be needed to ensure that all farmers practice elevated standards of hygiene. The Novamilk-35 discussion was lively and spirited, as Johan guided them through the correct feed mixing procedures. These farmers easily grasped the principles of adjusting feeding according to each cow’s needs and milk production. The group enjoyed the herd health and veterinary presentation – many took notes and a proposal was made to provide the MCC with a correct vaccination schedule for farmers to consult. There were a number of farmers in the gathering who are using A.I. already. They are assisted by A.I. technicians working in the area. Most understood the principles of genetics, and hope that soon there will be a communal semen flask held and maintained at the MCC, which would allow them to purchase and store semen for the members of the co-op.

Overall the three farmers meetings were a great success. The Parmalat extension officers in the regions were efficient in gathering all the farmers to the event and Mr. Clever Chisuwo, of Parmalat kindly translated all presentations and assisted with answering questions in the local languages. Thanks go to all those involved, for giving of their valuable time and knowledge, for the benefit of the small-holder farmers in the Southern Province.

Great Cow Families + Goldwyn = Success At Semex & Around The World

Admiral Jordan April 2012Cow families are the basis of any great breeding program and at Semex, we’re no different. The 200HO sires are built on a foundation of the world’s most successful maternal lines. We scour the Earth in search of the most sought-after genetics in order to help you be more profitable and meet your goals.

Famous proven Semex sires such as Starbuck, Aerostar, Rudolph and now Goldwyn are the kind of bulls that have served as the foundation of many herds worldwide, delivering both profitability and longevity. What made these sires so special was their own ability to stay relevant. In fact Goldwyn, still ranks as the #22 LPI and #61 TPI sire two years after his first son debuted, and nearly eight years since his own first official evaluation.

Two of Goldwyn’s sons continue to be among the most well-respected sires worldwide:
0200HO2235 Smithden Admiral VG-88 EXTRA debuted in August 2011 as the #1 LPI sire and his proof today still excels for the same qualities… Longevity, calving ease, low SCS, high components and solid type! No accident, this Designer Series™ and Health$mart™ sire’s maternal line is one of the industry’s most famous. His dam is Smithden Allen Alison VG-88 19* with 2 Superior Lactations and then three more Superior Lactation Award dams, all scored VG or EX. His proof tells us his daughters are just like these Smithden cows, with an impressive +1183 kgs Milk, +82 kgs Fat, +48 kgs Pro, an exceptional +108 Herd Life, solid conformation, low SCS, with great milking speed and calving ability. Admiral is best used on cows needing additional milk and fat with a balanced type profile.

0200HO05575 Gillette Jordan VG-87 EXTRA arrived in August 2010 along with a large wave of Goldwyn sons. Like his father, he offered great type, low SCS and great fat percentages. A year and half later, this Designer Series™, Repromax™ and Health$mart™ sire stands alone as one of a handful of proven sires in the world that can offer over +2.00 for PTAT, UDC and FLC, with less than 2.70 SCS, positive deviations and 92% production reliability! In Canada, the figures agree with a remarkable 74% GP and better rating on 241 daughters. This very special Goldwyn can take credit from his maternal line as his dam is the famous Gillette-I Durham Jericho EX 15*, with nearly 90,000 kgs lifetime and then four more VG or EX dams.
